It worked after I replaced maincpu.m with user.m , and then replaced user with user1.
I appreciate the answer not being given to me on a plate - I will now convert the other MK XML's so they work in this iteration of mame!

Help with using new cheats on old mame
Hi - Anyway I can use new cheats, for example the ones in the current XML for mortal kombat 2, in an old build of mame? I'm using Mame4Droid on my Ouya, and it runs the 0.139u romset. Theres lots of options offered in the new cheat file than there is for the 0.139u one. I've tried copying and pastin...
