It's probably a code hack using sprite zooming.

I've managed to unlock the 8 extra chars at least.

There is no "inside" info. Videoman was going to write a 386 core. He hasn't. The encryption fairy hasn't had too much luck with either of the games, the algorithms are known in some cases iirc, but the keys are too computationally intensive to find. So basically, there is nothing to know....

I'd personally really rather we didn't have cheats for this kind of thing here...
