kelvSYC's Guide 0.1a8 is out!
I took out the version history as it was getting tedious, and I merely added information on the Classic method of cheat searches. That's about it.

It's probably a server error - fetching the file from the server does not result in a blank file. In any case, it works now.

One quick historical correction....
<quote>The MAME and MESS cheat engine is designed by JCK, and was originally conceived during the v.34 beta stages of MAME development.</quote>
The original MAME cheat engine was actually programmed (designed is too loose a word as it was always a quick hack) by Marc Lafontaine in MAME 0.29 (and I believe at that stage it worked on all systems). At the start it was just cheat types 0 to 11 inclusive and type 0 worked for poking ROM locations ( to JCK fixed it ).
It got broken in future MAME releases, JCK basically fixed these problems....which kept the cheat engine available to the vast majority (ie DOS users) and added some new cheat types (bit, watch and select cheats) as well as improving the way the cheat engine worked. But the cheat engine remained a hack which broke with new MAME releases.
The MAME cheat file I'm currently updating is still loosely based on the MAME cheat file which was part of the MAME 0.29 distribution though that was tiny by comparison...not got it handy but I think it was less than 50K in size.

JCK didn't "break" type 0 : the change was caused by the way the writes to ROM areas were done via the write handlers ...
She improved the original cheat engine (I don't know when it was first developped, but I'm sure it existed in MAME 0.29) from MAME 34B2 to MAME 0.35 "final" ...
I've "hacked" it to make it work during between MAME 37B3 and MAME 37B7 (or so) before Ian decided to rewrite it (based on Brad Oliver proposition) ...
As for my cheat database for MAME 0.29, I shall have a copy of it somewhere (don't ask me where at the moment though ) ... If I find it, I can mail it to anybody if you want
BTW, thanks Pugsy for being our host for about 5 years now !

There's a typo in the "header" of your page :kelvSYC wrote: It's probably a server error - fetching the file from the server does not result in a blank file. In any case, it works now.

hehe, I never actually said 'broke' I said 'fixed'...I know the way the write handlers worked was not correct and ROM cheats where just a extra bonus bug. Anyway now with the excellent MAME debugger ROM cheats are not such a pain to make.

Would it be okay to host this on the cheat page? I see no reason why there can't be two FAQs..

Hell, mine's well out of date (And one of the remaining places on the web with my mail addy in cleartext).
It can go in the bin for all I care
Maybe the frontpage could do with a touch of sparkle for a release. What do you reckon? I'd be willing to help if you wanted, or someone with a bit more flair...

I could help make the main site as close as to being compliant with XHTML 1.0 and CSS2 as possible (XHTML 1.1 is out only because of the fact that IE doesn't recognize XHTML at all, and XHTML 1.0 works only because of the fact that it's only HTML 4.0 using XML rules). As for its design, I do have a few suggestions regarding the synchronization of the forum colors with that of the main page...
Also, I wouldn't mind having the main cheat page linking to the Guide, but having the Guide hosted at cheat.retrogames.com could present some logistics issues relating to how I submit my uploads (not that I am against it or anything).
If all the issues are resolved, I'd call the next version 0.2...
