Having trouble enabling cheats in MESS 0.146

Post by gamepimp »

I downloaded Pugsy's NES cheats for this version of MESS. In the MESS.ini file, I changed the value for "cheat" from 0 to 1. I then created a new text file called NES.ini and entered the following parameters per the "read me" file that came with the cheat:

writeconfig 0
cheatpath cheat_nes
cheat 1

But when I launch a game, I don't get the option in the on screen menu to enable cheats like I do in MAME. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you definitely using a game from the NES Software List?

My roms are named using GoodNES. I thought that might be an issue. So I renamed one of them (8eyes) to match the name of the XML file in the zip. Is that sufficient? Or would they have to be renamed using some utility like ClrMAMEPro?

Renaming them won't be enough....

You will get something like this output if it's not the exact rom...which 8eyes won't be as it's not a single rom file in the zip.

Code: Select all

H:\prg\messSVN>mess64 nes 8eyes
nes-8e-0 prg NOT FOUND
nes-8e-0 chr NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the system cannot be run.

H:\prg\messSVN>

Yes ClrMame or something like ROMVault can be used make the NES software list from what you have.....the likelihood is that you will need a LOT of fills (or be handy with a hex editor) so you maybe better just grabbing the full NES software list from PD or somewhere else.

For the game "8 Eyes", I have a zip file with one rom called "8 Eyes.nes". The game plays fine in MESS. I tried to rename it "8eyes" to match the cheat file. But clearly that wasn't sufficient. What is PD? I can find the software list there?

It's not on PD anyway, I meant to say UG which is a torrent site for emulation stuff - a search on google for underground gamer should find it.

Unfortunately the Software List is the only real way of making a cheat file for MESS as there are so many different versions of ROMs about all with different CRC32s.

One thing you could try is renaming 8eyes.xml based on the crc32, so for example if the crc32 of "8 Eyes.nes" is 0123abcd then rename the cheat xml file to 0123abcd. It might work and it might not...but get the proper ROMs is obviously the ideal.

Any recommendations on a program that would let me view the crc32 of a game? I tried hunting around for one and could not locate anything. I would prefer to have my roms named using Good or NoIntro conventions. Otherwise, I will have issues displaying the names of the games in my frontend program. However, if the workaround of renaming the cheat based off the CRC does not pan out, I may have to just download all the games in the Software List format. Thx again for all ur help with this. I really like using MESS for my console games. I am still using the scanline artwork as it gives me the best looking scanlines on the monitor I'm using. And it's very convenient to only have to maintain one emulator program for the majority of systems as opposed to updating a bunch of different emulators...

7zip, winzip, winrar will show the CRC of any files inside a zip file.
