This is the softwarelist compliant MESS cheat collection for the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis Console.

This cheat collection is based heavily on the HazeMD cheat file I released a few years
back.

Re: MESS 0.134 Megadrive/Genesis Cheat File

Thanks for the great work!!!

This is something that I have been looking forward to for sometime!!

I am having a bit of trouble accessing the cheat menu though? For whatever reason, when I hit the Tab button in game the Cheat option is not listed? I am able to toggle the cheats on and off both in game and using the .ini file. And I have gone as far as to verify the CRC's of the Genesis games I have tried using cheats on but still no menu?

Any idea what I am doing wrong? Does MESS need to be compiled with the cheats included? (I had read that they have been disabled until further notice).

Thanks and I look forward to contributing to this great project!! :D

This may help, the contents of the !README_FIRST!!.txt file. For cheat.zip substitute cheat_genesis.zip:

This archive you have downloaded contains 4 files

!README_FIRST!!.txt <--- the file you are reading
cheat.txt <--- A text file with some information
cheat_genesis_list.txt <--- A text file with cross reference information
cheat_genesis.zip <--- The cheat file, DO NOT UNZIP THIS ZIP!!!

Under normal circumstances you should NEVER unzip the cheat_genesis.zip contained in this
archive, it contains 6696 xml files and ideally should always be kept zipped up.

First of all unzip/un7z the downloaded archive and copy the still packed
cheat.zip file into the directory that contains the MESS executeable
(All MESS versions apart from the non-SDL Mac OS 9/X MESS ).
For MESS OS X (not SDL-MESS OSX) the cheat.zip file should be in:-
${HOME}/Library/Application Support/MESS OS X

Note you should add ;cheat_genesis to the end of the cheatpath line in your
MESS.ini file.

So
cheatpath cheat
becomes:-
cheatpath cheat;cheat_genesis

or

cheatpath cheat;cheat_tg16;cheat_coleco;cheat_gba
becomes:-
cheatpath cheat;cheat_tg16;cheat_coleco;cheat_gba;cheat_genesis

You might want to notice there exists no MacOSX MESS but SDLMESS ;)

Only MAME OSX exists from Dave

I figured out what I was doing wrong. I had correctly pointed the MESS.ini file to the cheat files, I was just changing a copy of the MESS.ini file I had previously made??

Not the one that MESS actually reads.

Everything is now sorted and running well so far.

Thanks!

May I suggest you to add to the documentation a note about possible conflicts across xml in different cheatpaths?

e.g. if I have both the MAME cheats and the MD cheats in my path, there might be conflicts between games with the same shortnames, like mk or nbajam. or if I have MD and SMS cheats, there might be conflicts between sonic, sonic2, etc.

usually, the overlapping is harmless (you get displayed cheats for the wrong system in addition to the correct ones, but it's not difficult to see where the ones you want start)
anyway, in the worst case the conflict might lead to a crash of the emu (e.g. if the arcade cheat file tries to modify a CPU which does not exist in MD), so maybe you might want to at least mention the fact in the documentation.

setting the cheatpath for consoles in *system*.ini (e.g. in megadriv.ini or genesis.ini) alleviates the problem, of course

Another small issue with MESS cheats: some cheats for megadrive (maybe also for other systems?) contain invalid xml comments

see e.g. akumajo.xml which has comments containing multiple dashes ( -- ), which is invalid in xml standards and hence does not load properly in MESS (or MAME fwiw)
If such a kind of comments is really needed, then I suggest to replace those with "- -" ;)

Thanks, fixed for the next release. Sounded worse than it was thankfully. Only affected 7 games in the megadrive cheat collection (and no others) and 5 of them where clones....
