Neo CD Cheats using Front End

Hello,
When I launch a Neo CD game from the command line, like
mame neocdz -cdrm aof2
the game boots and cheats load perfectly.
However when I use a front-end, it loads the CHD file, not the folder (art of fighting 2.chd) and the cheats don't load.
I've tried renaming the CHD, editing the neocd.xml, renaming the aof2.xml cheat file, etc.
I also can't find a way to get the front end to load the folder name and not the CHD itself. I don't think it's possible.
Any clue on how I can get the cheats to work with frontends?
