Select Color Unlock can be improved to update NVRAM directly, to not have to repeat the code everytime.
The method is illustrated in the comment;

:sfa3:62000000:000000:00000000:00000000:Select Color Unlock (NVRAM):To update NVRAM, enter in test mode, turn cheat ON, do a memory test then exit, reboot; now the setting is permanently unlocked (reboot again with cheat OFF to verify...)
:sfa3:00010000:FF0CE1:00000000:FFFFFFFF:Cream:Default
:sfa3:00010000:FF0CE1:00000001:FFFFFFFF:Red:Unlocks Classical Mode
:sfa3:00010000:FF0CE1:00000002:FFFFFFFF:Green:Unlocks Balrog, Juli, and Juni
:sfa3:00010000:FF0CE1:00000003:FFFFFFFF:Blue:Unlocks Mazi Mode and Saikyou Mode
:sfa3:00010000:FF0CE1:00000004:FFFFFFFF:Light Blue:Unlocks Survival and Dramatic Mode

(AND WITHOUT ACCESSING THE TEST MENU?)

:sfa3:61010001:000075:00000000:FFFFFFFF:Cream:Default
:sfa3:61010001:000075:00000001:FFFFFFFF:Red:Unlocks Classical Mode

I haven't understood fine the difference between NVRAM and EEPROM.

The NVRAM is saved to disk (sfa3.nv) but what is EEPROM ? I think that they are specular concepts...

(to find this cheat is impossible without debug mame and the memory windows.)

I gather fighting games are your speciality :wink: just as well, as Pugsy abhors them. :D

So at least the board has an regular attendant for those sorts of games now 8) Good on you Redbeam.

Find this cheat isn't difficult at all, I looked at the memory with a watch, then I calculated the offset from NVRAM zero and then this is the final NVRAM address.
WHY? WELL this game has an apart NVRAM space, so NVRAM address 0 = 0 in the final cheat code too.

Have you understood ? :P

Remember that I found ROM cheats for mahjongg, puzzle and card games too (fairly unique).

Pugsy does all sort of cheats (but I guess he prefers platforms) :oops:

Street Fighter Alpha 3: Select Colour Unlock doesn't seem to be working in newest 130u2. I got it working by changing it to this:

Code: Select all

<cheat desc="Select Colour Unlock">
    <parameter>

Cream (Default)

Red (Unlocks Classical Mode)

Green (Unlocks Balrog, Juli, and Juni)

Blue (Unlocks Mazi Mode and Saikyou Mode)

Light Blue (Unlocks Survival and Dramatic Mode)

    </parameter>

</cheat>
...but now it doesn't save the change to NVRAM.

I spent a while making sure that the converter handled the very few eeprom cheats remaining, and thankfully sfa3 still works just fine in 0.130u4.

Select "Red (Unlocks Classical Mode)" after you've inserted a credit, and press ENTER to enable the option.
Press F3 to reset the game
Now when you insert a credit the background has a reddish tinge
Exit the game
Restart and the same background is still red

Thanks for the quick reply, followed your instructions on a fresh install of the newest MAME Windows binary but it's still not happening for me. Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Mmmmm, that's pretty damn annoying. It was working fine a few hours ago but now it's doing nothing....odd!

Sorry for my earlier post, you are correct. I will investigate further to see if I can get the eeprom writes to work once more :(

Right, looked into it...seems that the memory locations of the eeprom hold 16 bit values now. Don't know why....

But here's the fixed code:-

Code: Select all

  <cheat desc="Select Colour Unlock"> <comment>EEPROM Code, Push F3 to see the effect made permanent. (NOTE - the colour refers to the background colour after you've inserted a credit)</comment>
    <parameter>

Cream (Default)

Red (Unlocks Classical Mode)

Green (Unlocks Balrog, Juli, and Juni)

Blue (Unlocks Mazi Mode and Saikyou Mode)

Light Blue (Unlocks Survival and Dramatic Mode)

    </parameter>

  </cheat>

sorry for posting this old post but, is there any way to make the background color permanently in this games?
