Unable to activate cheats in mess...please help

i used the cheats file on mame for years so i know my way on .ini etc...but this is the first time i'm trying cheats for mess.i downloaded the pugsy files from main page,the NES one in my case.put it on both the root folder of mess and created a "cheat" folder,put it inside and enabled the cheats on messui,on both the ui aand the .ini files.but whatever nes game i start,there's no "cheat" voice on the TAB menu...what can i do?

In the cheat_nes.zip file you downloaded you will find 3 files:-

!README_FIRST!!.txt <--- the file with the information you need
cheat.txt <--- A text file with some information
cheat_nes.7z <--- The cheat file, DO NOT UNPACK THIS FILE - place it as is the MESS directory (NOT the cheats folder)


Open !README_FIRST!!.txt in a text editor and ensure you follow the instructions.



One important thing that I didn't mention when you are editing the nes.ini file make sure that MESS isn't running as it may overwrite any changes you make to get cheats working.

followed the instruction to the letter and modified the ini while messui isn't running..same issue,as i said before,i used the cheat file for mame befiore,and i know that it has to be put in root folder etc etc.modified the ini with cheat_nes,and nothing,no nes games has the cheat menu voice

I don't personally use MESSUI, I never liked (in fact I hated it with a passion) the MESS UI so for me it's the commandline all the way.

I suspect there's some setting you are missing in MESSUI to make cheats work.

I definitely think the problem is @ your end, just tried it and worked straight away.

I suggest you do what I just did.....

Download the latest MESSUI from

http://messui.the-chronicles.org/

Extract it to a fresh directory.

Copy cheat_nes.7z into this fresh directory along side messui64.exe

Copy the HASH folder over from your current MESS directory

Run it, set the MESS ROM and software list directories

Run a NES game (to create the NES.ini file)

Close down MESS completely

Open ini\nes.ini in a text editor (eg. Notepad), and add the following lines at the end of
nes.ini and save it:-

writeconfig 0
cheatpath cheat_nes
cheat 1

Run MESSUI, play 1942, press TAB and select CHEAT and enable the cheat you want.
