Kinst and Kinst2 running problems

Post by djdk2000 »

Hi!

I've downloaded and "installed" my 2 favourite fighting games: Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct 2. How great that MAME does support those two :)

Now, the problem is this: when I run kinst or kinst2 the game doesn't work correctly. It runs very slowly and has very poor sound. In other words you can't play :(

What are the requirements for KI and KI2?

I have a pretty good machine: P4 1.6GHz and 512 Mb DDRAM. Fast HD and Geforce 2 GTS graphics adapter with 64Mb RAM and 4xAGP.

What slows down the game ?!

(Earlier I used another emulator 2 play KI games - with no problems whatsoever).

Help anyone?

ps here's what I've got that I think could be the problem:

[Kinst - In MAME]
F2->Diagnostics-Tests->Sound Board Test->General Sound Test:

0 TONES - CHECK HARDWARE
1 TONES - ALL OK
2 TONES - BAD U10 CHECKSUM
3 TONES - BAD U11 CHECKSUM
4 TONES - BAD U12 CHECKSUM
5 TONES - BAD U13 CHECKSUM
6 TONES - BAD U33 CHECKSUM
7 TONES - BAD U34 CHECKSUM
8 TONES - BAD U35 CHECKSUM
9 TONES - BAD U36 CHECKSUM
10 TONES - RAM TEST FAILED

More than twice the processor speed you have.

Blitter-based graphics hardware, a fast main CPU, and the Midway sound system.

That emulator is substantially less accurate than MAME.

The next version of MAME should include Aaron Giles' new dynarec which might make KI1 playable on your system. KI2 probably won't run at 100%, though.

Oh my God! More than TWICE times faster than my CPU?
For that kind of old game??

That is sad news :( I hope this next version of MAME at least allows me 2 play KI.
But seriously, what's the big differense between that emulator I used and the MAME, when talking about KI and KI2? Is there anything I can do in options (in MAME) 2 optimize the performance? Anything?

Thx for reply :)

Accuracy. The other emulator takes shortcuts to achieve faster emulation. It is also a standalone emulator, so the code can be optimized for a specific game, unlike MAME, which is optimized for the general case.

Emulation usually takes ~10x the clock rate of the sum of the clock rates of the original CPUs (give or take 5x depending on the video hardware) for full framerate. A 100MHz MIPS chip is nothing to be laughed at.

Turn sound off. That's about it.
