marvland cheats
I can't say I played it at an arcade, that would've made me dirt poor. I originally became acquainted with Marvel Land with the Genesis version, and when I found out there was an arcade version I figured I wanted to beat it myself through emulation.
Yes, right after you launch yourself from the ship at the very end, the game ends. You don't even need to look for another platform to land on, because once you reach a certain height, the game takes it from there. So just try to catapult yourself up as far as you can and you'll beat the level.
Of course, learning how to use those giant swingy boats takes a lot of practice, and it doesn't help that there's freaking lava that will kill you.
Hey Zed Zed, I've noticed your movie file and the falling spikes act quite differently from what they're supposed to do. What version of Marvel Land are you playing? I noticed the US version seems incomplete and doesn't feature all the levels of the Jap version.

I'm not sure that entire levels are absent from the US version but there are minor differences. This article notes some of them - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_LandI noticed the US version seems incomplete and doesn't feature all the levels of the Jap version.
And yes, that video features the US version, and shows me utilising the 'Ratchet Jump' cheat.
PS - have you added Pugsy's cheat codes to your 'Codes' section of the Marvel Land site?
I've decided against adding game genie or MAME cheats to my site.
Anyway, I just went through the English version of Marvel Land and noticed that World 4 is completely inaccessible, which is what I meant by omitted levels. I tried the level select cheat to get to World 4, but it doesn't seem to work for me or I'm using it wrong.
I'd love to be able to explore the levels in the same way as the Sonic debug cheat. Does anyone know if this is possible? I've actually wanted to recreate the game in 3d, or at least a couple of levels, but it's kinda hard to do that if I can't look at every nook and cranny of the level.
Well, I suppose if someone made such a cheat, no one would be wondering how the game ended, eh?

Is this the level 4 you mean?

If you do, it's there and easily accessible. Just use the arrow keys to select the cheat and which level you want to start on (left and right arrow keys).
No idea about a sonic debug cheat.
And I forgot to say, you are a games player par excellence to complete Marvel Land unaided by cheats.

Agreed. But how come, as he said, the last level had the spikes falling in a wierd (almost random) pattern... When they're supposed to fall in a more orderly fashion...?...you are a games player par excellence to complete Marvel Land unaided by cheats.
I'm just saying that us using it in mame were the victims of a harder difficulty level (somehow). That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I think this is the type of game that once you learn and memorize the patterns - one could blow through most of the stages pretty quickly.

Speaking of Sonic... I almost posted this at the mame forum. If you're running fast enough you can clear most (smaller) gaps. I don't believe this is possible in the Genesis version.
As always, your patients is appreciated.

You have a point. Pugsy has surmised it may be a bug problem with this particular ROM dump. Certainly the game doesn't end where it's supposed to - what else is wrong?I'm just saying that us using it in mame were the victims of a harder difficulty level (somehow). I think this is true of 90% of arcade games of the era.think this is the type of game that once you learn and memorize the patterns - one could blow through most of the stages pretty quickly.

Nope, I tried the level select in the US version and it doesn't work for me. Actually, it doesn't work for me in the Jap version either, but all the other cheats for both versions work for me. I wonder if it has anything to do with the manager settings (when you press F1). I tried to imitate what Zed Zed did in his movie too.
Anyway, another thing I've noticed is that the US version is indeed permanently in hard mode similar to the Genesis version of the game, where everyone attacks faster, walks faster, and moves faster, though enemies still die at the same amount of damage, which is different from the Genesis hard mode, where all enemies hit points are doubled.

You are VERY likely using an old version of MAME, the level select cheat uses the 'Write if Match' option which was only added fairly recently. Try a newer version!Cuckooguy wrote:Nope, I tried the level select in the US version and it doesn't work for me. I've been snooping around the 'net and I found this Japanese site. I don't speak or read Japanese, but I've noticed there are a lot of odd items that I've never seen before in any iteration of Marvel Land. Does anyone recognize the blue trash can or the three icons that are in a row?
Thanks to this site and babelfish translations, I finally learned that the boots cause you to stop slippering around the ice in World 4.

Ah! I get it. The trash bins say 'dust' because... when you get a Power-up... It's like you're rummaging through the trash.
...I guess.

Paste that other url into the search and have the bullet on the one that has the 2 square thingys on the left...
I was thinking the red shoes made you go fater, but I was never sure. It's nice to finally know.
I guess that makes a 3rd cheat we'll need. I've tried to look for this one before, but stuff is hard to find in this game (for me).

Since people here seem to be quite familiar with arcade games, I thought this was as good a time to ask as any.

On the above page (the html is screwy in Mozilla Firefox, I'll have to fix that someday), I've listed references to other games seen in Marvel Land.
I've never been able to find out the origins of a purple carriage (I'd post the image if I wasn't below ten posts). Does, like, anyone know what game that purple carriage is from? It's the third one up from the bottom of the page.
Also, I have come to the conclusion that Marvel Land USA is indeed incomplete. I've got the level select to work, and managed to access World 4, and after you escape from the castle and catapult yourself up, you just fall back down to your doom/boat/lava, which contrasts with the Jap version where if you get high enough, the game automatically takes it from there. Zed Zed's ratchet jump video seems to confirm this. Also, the ice isn't slippery in World 4 of the US version, which leaves me to believe it wasn't programmed in yet.

Anyway, I think you'd better post such request on "MAME Chat" board
